2009-10 Goals and Objectives
GOAL I: Provide The Evergreen State College student body and extended community with a pertinent weekly newspaper, on the web and in print.
Objective A
Strive to inform and/or entertain readers through
- truthful and intelligent accounts of issues and events presented in a meaningful context
- coverage of the opinions, attitudes and conditions of the constituent groups of the Evergreen community and the larger society
- examination and evaluation of the goals and values of the college, the Evergreen community and the larger society
- providing access to news and information about Evergreen and Evergreen-related matters
Objective B
Provide a forum for the exchange of comment and criticism, especially for efforts that promote awareness and understanding of diversity and that confront injustice.
Objective C
Produce a newspaper in a manner commensurate with rights established by and responsibilities that accompany the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States and the Freedom of Speech Article of the Constitution of the State of Washington.
Objective D
Produce a newspaper on teh web that uses to advantage multimedia capabilities as opportunities to enhance communication and expression.
GOAL II: Afford any student of The Evergreen State College, registered for 4 or more credits, the opportunity to be a member of the Cooper Point Journal organization and contribute to the production of the newspaper Cooper Point Journal.
Objective A
Maintain a recruitment effort throughout each school year to inform students that membership
in the CPJ as a student organization is open to all.
Objective B
Maintain and publicize throughout each school year regularly scheduled and open-to-all Cooper Point Journal organization/publication meetings.
Objective C
Maintain the CPJ organization and publication guiding policy document, Cooper Point Journal: Operations and Ethics, through consensus decision-making at open meetings.
Objective D
Provide easy access to such pertinent organization/publication information as Cooper Point Journal: Operations and Ethics, publication submission guidelines and applications for and descriptions of publication staff positions.
GOAL III: Provide an outlet for opinion/diverse points of view, analysis of news and events, poetry, photography, comics, graphic design and visual artwork.
Objective A
Maintain a focused and purposeful effort starting in Orientation Week and sustained throughout the school year to inform students the Cooper Point Journal encourages and accepts contributions from all students.
Objective B
Include content submission information on the Cooper Point Journal's organization website (http://cpj.evergreen.edu), the website of the Cooper Point Journal's web newspaper (www.cooperpointjournal.com) and in each print edition.
Objective C
Provide a written submissions guide that includes such information as deadlines, formats for written and graphic work and size limits for written and graphic work and CPJ publication policies concerning such things as unprotected speech, profanity, malicious speech and plagiarism.
GOAL IV: Provide a laboratory in which students can learn about and practice: basic tenets of journalism, effective ways to gather information, writing techniques, various ways to present information, personal and collective responsibility, group dynamics and decision making.
Objective A
Provide students with an understanding of the ethical and legal responsibilities that accompany freedom of the press and accompany the operations of the news and business departments of the newspaper, from the inception of an assignment through publication.
Objective B
Educate newspaper staff and contributors about the responsibilities and techniques of gathering and disseminating information.
Objective C
Encourage exploration in all areas of journalism, including the opportunities afforded by the capbilities of a multimedia web newspaper.
Objective D
Provide students with the opportunity to be responsible for managing, editing and producing a web and print newspaper and managing the combined business and fiscal operations of both.
GOAL V: Operate the CPJ in an ethically and fiscally responsible manner.
Objective A
Provide students the opportunity to be responsible for the fiscal health and success of the print and web publications.
Objective B
Provide, through properly managed S&A Board allocations and advertising revenues, the capital needed to finance the operations of web and print newspapers that aim to inform the community and serve students as a learning lab.
Objective C
Maintain up-to-date accurate records concerning revenue and expenditures.
Objective D
Respect, uphold and creatively operate within the fiscal restraints of the Cooper Point Journal organization's budget
